Russia - Scientists Explain How Cold Can Protect Against COVID-19 Infection

Russia (bbabo.net), - Broad-acting cellular immunity, which some people develop after the common cold, is able to suppress coronavirus. This conclusion was reached by British scientists, the results of their research were published in the journal Nature Communications.

According to one of the study authors, Dr. Ria Kundu of the Imperial National Heart and Lung Institute, high levels of pre-existing T cells created by the body when infected with other human coronaviruses, such as the common cold, have been found to protect against COVID-19 infection.

It is noted that in 2020, when most people were not yet infected or vaccinated, 52 people in the UK who had contact with covid were taken PCR tests to determine if they had developed an infection. This allowed the researchers to analyze the levels of pre-existing T cells induced by previous colds. At the same time, it was found that the level of T cells was significantly higher in 26 people who did not become infected with the coronavirus. These T cells are reported to target the internal proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, rather than a spike protein on the surface of the virus, to protect against infection.

Nevertheless, experts emphasize that in this case we are talking only about one of the forms of protection, and one should not rely solely on it. Still the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to get fully vaccinated, including booster vaccinations.

Earlier, epidemiologist Mikhail Favorov gave a forecast after the end of the pandemic. In an interview, he explained that the omicron strain, which is more contagious but less pathogenic than delta, was created by the conditions created by mass vaccination. It is this strain, in his opinion, that could be a harbinger of the end of the pandemic.
