Man found dead in a pre-trial detention center in Moscow

A man was found dead in a cell in a pre-trial detention center (SIZO) in Moscow, REN TV reports.

According to the TV channel, the man could have committed suicide. It is clarified that the deceased was a defendant in the case under Part 2 of Art. 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Illegal acquisition, storage, transportation, manufacture, processing of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their analogues).

All the circumstances of the incident are being established.

In December, a prisoner committed suicide in Moscow's Butyrka pre-trial detention center. Three criminal cases were initiated against the man under the article on theft and one on robbery.

Earlier, the head of the Moscow POC, Georgy Volkov, said that the capital's isolation wards were overcrowded by 11.2%. The limit of pre-trial detention centers of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Moscow is 8999 people, but in fact there are 1009 more people in them. According to him, members of the commission report cases when prisoners sleep on mattresses on the floor. Moscow lacks another one or two pre-trial detention centers for 1,000 prisoners, the head of the PMC believes. There are currently ten pre-trial detention centers in the capital.
