Tokayev instructed to mitigate punishment for detainees during riots

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the Prosecutor General's Office to establish the degree of guilt of all those detained during the riots and, if possible, mitigate the punishment. The head of state announced this in his microblog on Twitter.

“I instruct the Prosecutor General's Office to establish the degree of guilt of other persons. In the absence of aggravating circumstances, measures should be taken to mitigate the punishment, ”the message says.

On January 2, mass protests began in Kazakhstan, citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the doubling of prices for liquefied gas. In Alma-Ata, the largest city of the republic, as well as other cities, riots, looting, attacks on state institutions and security officials began. In connection with the incident, the authorities of Kazakhstan introduced a state of emergency. The Prosecutor General's Office of the republic announced the initiation of 494 criminal cases following the results of the riots.
