Tesla has advocated the waiver of duties on the import of graphite from China to the United States

The American edition of CNBC reports that Tesla and SK Innovation have sent a request to the US Trade Representation to waive customs duties for the import of graphite from China into the United States. The leadership of the tech giants explained this step by the fact that there is not a single company in the United States that could fully cover the needs of production.

Tesla representatives also noted that disruption to supply chains strongly affects the rise in prices for new and used cars all over the country. And the consequences of the trade confrontation between the Donald Trump administration and the Chinese government do not allow the prompt production of a sufficient number of vehicles. So Tesla filed three public requests this Wednesday to waive import duties on graphite, which it uses to make anode components for lithium-ion batteries.

SK Innovation also supported Tesla's claims and sent requests through its subsidiary SK Battery America, also a battery manufacturer.

If the US Trade Office approves the applications, both companies can more quickly manufacture batteries and market them at competitive prices. SK Innovation also separately emphasized that the removal of duties would help expand production and create additional full-time jobs.

Other car manufacturers also advocate the abolition of duties on the import of raw materials from abroad. These include Toyota, Magna and AutoZone. These companies are focusing not only on imports of graphite, but also on the supply of ready-made electric motors, seats, printed circuit boards and driver assistance systems.

In turn, experts from Resource World reported that the production of one hybrid car requires an average of 10 kilograms of graphite, and for an all-electric model about 100 kilograms.
