Biggest recall ever: Hyundai and Kia owners asked not to park indoors or near buildings due to potential fire risk

According to CNN, Hyundai and Kia have withdrawn nearly half a million vehicles from the market (357,000 and 126,000 respectively). They also warn owners against parking indoors or near buildings due to the potential risk of fire.

Both companies have identified a problem with the anti-lock braking system computer control module, which can cause a short circuit and a fire in the engine compartment, whether the car is running or turned off.

Hyundai is recalling the Santa Fe crossovers from 2016 to 2018, the Santa Fe Sport from 2017 and 2018, the 2019 Santa Fe XL and the Tucson from 2014 to 2015. Meanwhile, Kia is recalling K900 sedans from 2016 to 2018, as well as Sportage crossovers from 2014 to 2016. According to CNN, Kia has recorded three cases of car fires due to this cause.

This is not the first time a car manufacturer has had to recall vehicles due to fire risk. Chevrolet also had to warn Bolt EV owners to avoid indoor parking as early as July 2021, after supposedly fixing an existing fire risk in November 2020.

If your car is on the list, then you need to contact the service center. Your vehicle's anti-lock braking system control module will be checked and if found to be faulty, it will be replaced. The service technician will also likely replace the fuse to reduce the amount of electrical current supplied to the module. All this will be free for owners.
