Meta filed a complaint against a turnover fine of 1.99 billion rubles imposed by a Russian court

On January 18, 2022, a Moscow court received a complaint from Meta, in which the company is challenging the turnover fine of 1,990,984,950 rubles and 5 kopecks imposed on it by the court for massive repeated violations of Russian law and failure to delete prohibited information on Facebook and Instagram on the orders of Roskomnadzor.

Meta's lawyers in the complaint ask the court to cancel the turnover fine and stop the proceedings in this case. The court scheduled a hearing on this complaint for February 15.

On December 24, 2021, the World Court of the Tagansky District of Moscow fined Meta (Facebook) 1.99 billion rubles in case No. 05-3221/422/2021. An administrative penalty was imposed for an offense under paragraph 5 of Art. 13.41 Administrative Code of the Russian Federation. The penalty for this offense is from 1/20 to 1/10 of the annual turnover of the Internet company received for the calendar year preceding the year in which the administrative offense was detected.

By law, Meta (Facebook) has 60 days to pay a turnover fine from the moment the court decision on it comes into force. The term for the legal end of the payment of the fine, subject to the fact that the court decision is challenged, will come to an end in early or mid-summer 2022. After that, in case of non-payment, the Federal Bailiff Service (FSSP) will be engaged in the enforcement of a fine (enforcement proceedings) from the American company.
