US microelectronics maker AMD has said it will supply next-generation Ryzen chips for the 2022 Tesla Model 3 and Y electric vehicles. They will be used in the manufacture of MCU3 infotainment computers and will replace current Intel Atom A3950 chips from Tesla's previous generation of electric cars.

Onboard Model X and S systems already use AMD GPUs with RDNA2 architecture. The solutions used in the production of multimedia platforms for cars are based on Zen Plus Vega.

At CES 2022, the company revealed that RDNA2 has a wide range of uses.

AMD CEO Lisa Su told Anandtech magazine that RDNA2 dominates the ecosystem from consoles to PCs, as well as its mobile partnership with Samsung. She noted that she appreciates Tesla's choice of Ryzen and Radeon for the Model X and S.

Su noted that AMD's solutions will be applied to the Model Y and 3 infotainment systems. These electric vehicles will be produced in 2022 in North America. As a result, all four Tesla vehicles are now equipped with AMD chips.

The automaker claims that EV infotainment systems provide computing power of up to 10 teraflops, which is comparable to the performance of the PlayStation 5. The Model 3 and Y were originally intended for the European market, but the updated versions, which are now equipped with a new 12V lithium-ion battery, will go on sale in the US.

At the beginning of last year, the head of Tesla, Elon Musk, said that Cyberpunk 2077 and other demanding games can be played on the multimedia system of the updated Model S.

Last November, Electrek reported that the Tesla Model Y Performance is shipping to China with an AMD Ryzen processor. Analysts attributed this decision to the manufacturer's lack of chips.

Tesla announced last week that owners of previously released EV models will be able to swap out Intel's solutions for AMD Ryzen and AMD GPUs for an additional fee. However, the cost of this upgrade is still unknown.
