Neighborhood reconciliation program to be developed in Estonia

The Estonian police intend to develop a program for the reconciliation of neighbors by this spring. Its goal is to relieve government bodies from the stream of domestic complaints and find an organization that will deal with the regulation of disputes between neighbors.

According to the Estonian TV channel ERR, thousands of reports of conflicts between neighbors are sent to the police every year, in most cases there is no corpus delicti. Most often, people complain about noise from neighbors or about improper parking near the house.

Commissioner of the Pyhja prefecture Margarita Ingel notes that often people do not know their neighbors, they do not even greet them. Therefore, they are not able to independently resolve a controversial issue. She herself often works as a volunteer in solving conflict situations of residents of the same house.

According to the Estonian police, not only volunteers, but also housing organizations could take on the role of peacekeepers in the disputes of neighbors.

"We are still thinking about what service could be the most suitable, effective and useful in resolving disputes," said Acting Elder of Lasnamäe District Anu Aus. According to her, you need to find the right person or organization that can help and, possibly, prevent problems.
