Harlan Ullman, senior adviser to the Atlantic Council in Washington, believes that in order to resolve internal and external political problems of the United States, it is necessary to convene a council, which will consist of the predecessors of the current head of the White House. Reported by The Hill.
“Suppose a council of former presidents is convened at Camp David for a long time. Jimmy Carter may not be present due to his age. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump together represent 32 years of presidential experience, ”the expert said.
According to him, this idea should be extended to joint meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Ullman also expressed the view that the main task of the council is to find a compromise that will serve the interests of all parties.
In addition, he stated that the political system of the United States was in crisis due to what he said was outdated, the constitution of the 18th century. Amendments to the main document is impossible due to the peculiarities of the bipartisan system, the expert said.
“It would be the strangest meeting. But given the gravity of our crisis, what is the alternative? " - added Ulman.
Earlier, Thomas Wright, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, announced the end of the unipolar world led by the United States because of the Ukrainian crisis. He noted that the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the intervention in Syria, the construction of artificial islands by China in the South China Sea, the use of military power by Turkey are evidence of changes in the foreign policy environment.
