About 300 dogs and cats left during the withdrawal of coalition troops were taken out of Afghanistan

On a special flight from Kabul to Canadian Vancouver, 158 dogs and 146 cats were taken out, which the troops of the international coalition, who hastily left Afghanistan in September last year, could not take with them.

The removal was carried out after six months of preparatory work carried out by organizations involved in helping animals, such as SPCA International, Kabul small animal rescue and others.

For transportation, an Il-76TD cargo plane of the Russian air carrier Aviakon Zitotrans was chartered, which has experience in transporting animals and in 2020, for example, transported an elephant from Pakistan to Cambodia.

In order for the animals to feel comfortable in flight, the pressure was optimized on board and the temperature was maintained at 21 degrees Celsius. They were also accompanied by veterinarians. The plane made two stops along the way, in Ankara and Keflavik in Iceland.

A special complex has been built for the evacuated animals near the Vancouver airport, where they will be kept until the owners show up or someone wants to take a dog or cat taken out of Afghanistan.

The animals were taken out on the second attempt. Initially, they tried to evacuate them in August 2021 during the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, but then the enterprise was unsuccessful. All this time, the animals were in a shelter near the Kabul airport.

Animal care organizations say they intend to continue commercial flights to take out of Afghanistan pets left in the shelter there who were sick or too young to fly now.
