Gold and foreign exchange reserves of Belarus rose to $8.5 billion

Over the past month, Belarus' gold and foreign exchange reserves increased by $98.8 million, amounting to $8.5 billion in equivalent, according to preliminary data from the country's financial regulator, BelTA reports on Monday, February 7.

Analysts explain that the growth of international reserve assets in January was facilitated by the inflow of foreign currency into the budget, including from the collection of export duties, as well as the purchase of foreign currency by the National Bank at the auctions of the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange.

It also became known that in the first month of the year, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus fulfilled external and internal obligations in foreign currency in the amount of almost $360 million.

In addition, the statistics of the National Bank of Belarus state that individuals continue to be net sellers of foreign currency. In January, they sold $30.4 million more than they bought. And the total volume of cash and non-cash foreign currency purchased by them in January amounted to $832.5 million, and sold - $862.9 million.

And business entities - residents of Belarus, the agency clarifies, in January also acted as net sellers of foreign currency. Based on the data of the National Bank, enterprises sold $50.1 million in foreign currency equivalent more than they bought.

As for the total volume of foreign currency purchased by legal entities, last month it amounted to $2.031 billion, and sold - $2.081 billion.

By the way, judging by the main directions of the country's monetary policy, for 2022 the volume of international reserve assets as of January 1, 2023 should be at least $7 billion.
