Germany fears US sanctions over Nord Stream 2

The United States may impose sanctions on Germany over the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. This opinion was expressed by historian Katja Hoyer in an article for The Telegraph.

According to her, Germany miraculously avoided sanctions from Washington, and this issue is still on the agenda. The historian believes that Berlin is too dependent on Moscow in the energy issue, which does not allow supporting the anti-Russian policy of Western countries. Hoyer expressed the opinion that if the new German government closes all nuclear power plants in the country, then Germany's dependence on Russian gas will increase.

The article emphasizes that it is unfair to place all responsibility for the current situation only on German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock, former chancellors Gerhard Schroeder and Angela Merkel are also largely to blame.

“The first (Schroeder's note) launched Nord Stream 2 and still chairs the committee of its shareholders. The second (Merkel - approx.) oversaw its construction and accelerated the closure of German nuclear power plants, ”wrote Hoyer.

He added that now the political blame for "Germany's dependence on Russia" fell on the shoulders of Burbock.

Earlier, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, said that it was impossible to turn off Nord Stream 2, since it had not yet been turned on, and this was bad for the participants in the process and gas consumers in Europe.

Prior to this, the Financial Times reported that the issue of launching Nord Stream 2 caused a split in the German government. The gas pipeline has already driven a wedge between Germany and the United States, and now, against the backdrop of the Ukrainian problem, it has allegedly become a bone of contention within Germany itself.
