The trial of a 36-year-old Syrian doctor, who is accused of torturing patients in a military hospital who were opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has begun at the Higher District Court in Frankfurt am Main. It is reported by Reuters.
The defendant, who is being tried under the code name Alaa M., worked as a doctor in a military prison and hospitals in Homs and Damascus in 2011 and 2012.
In 2015, he came to Germany and worked as a doctor in several German clinics, becoming one of 5,000 Syrian doctors who received a work visa in Germany. In June 2020, he was arrested and placed in a pre-trial detention center.
It is known that the detainee has two children. He denies the allegations.
Earlier, the Higher Regional Court in Koblenz (Germany) delivered a historic decision against 44-year-old Syrian Eyad A., sentencing him to four and a half years in prison for complicity in crimes against humanity.
