Brazil has identified 500 dangerous tourist areas for travelers

The study was carried out by the Ministry of Tourism of the South American country after a rock collapse in the state of Minas Gerais that killed 10 people.

Tourism Minister Gilson Machado Neto said the Brazilian Geological Survey, which operates under the Ministry of Mines and Energy, has identified 500 natural areas popular with tourists where there is a risk of a repeat of the January 8 tragedy.

According to the minister, it is important not only to find those responsible for the deaths, but also to do everything possible to prevent such cases in the future: "Already now we are actively involving the authorities of the states and municipalities to search for and identify dangers at an early stage." Thus, the Department of the Environment of the northeastern state of Piaui has already closed the canyon of the Poti River to the public as part of its safety check for travelers and the preparation of a report for the Ministry of Tourism. The states of Sergipe and Alagoas formed a team of geographers and geologists to conduct research in the federal reserve of the Xingo Canyon.

Experts from the Geological Survey draw attention to the shortcomings of the current Brazilian law, which determines the need for such inspections and risk studies only in urban areas. In remote areas, where waterfalls, canyons, rocks and caves are located, such monitoring is not mandatory.
