The scale of EU sanctions against Russia “in the event of an aggravation of the situation around Ukraine” will depend on Moscow’s actions. This was stated during a briefing in Brussels by the official representative of the EU Foreign Service, Peter Stano, RIA Novosti reports.

“The scale and type of EU sanctions that will be taken against Russia in the event of any action against Ukraine will significantly depend on the type and extent of Russia’s actions,” he said.

According to Stano, despite the preparation of sanctions, the EU is focusing on diplomacy in order to achieve a de-escalation from Russia and start a dialogue.

Since the fall of last year, the Western media, as well as in Ukraine, have been claiming that Russia is allegedly preparing a “large-scale invasion” of Ukraine. In Moscow, such allegations have been repeatedly rejected.

Earlier it was reported that the European Union, together with the UK, is developing a package of new sanctions against Russian projects in the gas sector, which are planned to be introduced in the event of an escalation around Ukraine.
