Nord Stream 2 has become a bone of contention in the German government

The issue of launching Nord Stream 2 caused a split in the German government. Columnist Guy Chazan writes about this in an article for the British edition of the Financial Times.

According to him, the gas pipeline has already driven a wedge between Germany and the United States, and now, against the background of the Ukrainian problem, it has become a bone of contention within Germany itself. Opponents of the project in the country's leadership are convinced that the gas pipeline will increase Europe's dependence on Russian energy carriers. The project was largely supported by center-left political forces, while the "greens" spoke out against it.

The Social Democrats, who traditionally advocate friendly relations with Russia, point to the importance of the Russian project for German industry. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz from the SPD refused to publicly approve the sanctions against Nord Stream 2.

According to the head of the German Foreign Ministry from the "green" Annalena Berbock, the highway should not be launched in the event of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, and Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht urged not to connect these two issues with each other.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the certification procedure for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline should be carried out in a timely manner, outside the political conjuncture.
